If you've ever walked past a middle school band room during the first week of school, you probably heard something resembling a flock of angry geese. But if you walk past that same room in May, you'll hear a living, breathing ensemble playing cohesive, beautiful music.
Middle School band is one of the most transformative Encore classes a student can take. It's far more than just learning how to blow into a piece of metal or hit a drum; it is a unique mix of a team sport, a foreign language, and a hands-on art studio.
Hope Middle School Band offers students a chance to begin learning to play a wind or percussion instrument. No previous experience is required - only a desire to learn and grow! In Band, the concepts we cover are interdisciplinary: we create art, study math, learn reading skills (music is a foreign language!), history, science, anatomy, team work... the list goes on and on. We work on caring for our instruments, developing positive routines, building relationships, and collaboration as a group.
The study of music, specifically instrumental music, has been shown to improve cognitive reasoning and ability - it makes us smarter! It also allows students to be creative and expressive in a way no other subject can. The variety of instruments in our school band is unmatched by any other ensemble. Band is just plain fun!
